African American Odyssey

The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all slaves in the Confederate states were "forever free." Black people were home, church and business owners. They formed their own communities. The group of African Americans in the picture is standing before a church on Broad Street in Richmond after the city was taken by Union soldiers in 1865.

Pictured are the African American volunteers who were ready to serve in the Civil War when the Union called them. Prior to the Emancipation Proclamation President Lincoln and Union leaders questioned the abolition of slavery and the employment of black troops.  On January 1, 1863, the Proclamation took effect and emancipated Confederate slaves and  black soldiers were allowed to enroll. By the end of the war about 186,000 African American men had enlisted.
