Quote from 2nd Inaugural Address

“It might seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God’s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces; but let us judge not, that we be not judged.”- Abraham Lincoln, 2nd Inaugural Address, 1865.

It’s strange that a man would pray for another man’s suffering for his own personal sake.  But we should not judge that man, because we don’t want to be judged ourselves.

This passage interested me because I agree that it doesn’t seem right to wish misery on anyone.  Asking God to inflict pain or hardship on anyone is sanctimonious.  That’s judgmental on my part, but that is my belief.  The judgment of man is just an opinion that does not faze me.
